Pathway to TOEFL

Foundational English

Students will build their vocabulary and grammar to feel comfortable in everyday situations. During the second part of Level 1, students will begin to explore more advanced vocabulary and concepts such as essay structures.

Students will find themselves challenged by more advanced grammar and further broaden their vocabulary: preparing themselves for the academic English needed to succeed at Level 3 and 4.

Academic English

Being the first of the two advanced levels, Level 3 helps students learn English through academic materials (lectures, scientific passages, campus based themes) in all four skill areas (reading, writing, listening, speaking). As a result, students will learn concepts and vocabulary necessary to comprehend a wider range of topics from different disciplines including earth science, social sciences, and business.

Level 4 further improves students’ academic competence by exposing them to increasingly challenging materials from university lectures and more difficult texts taken from a wide variety of academic journals, magazines, and other publications.

Advanced TOEFL Prep

Students can only enroll in level 5 upon completion of level 4. In level 5, students will apply their academic English skills to three challenging TOEFL content areas. Students will hone their TOEFL test prep skills and deepen their academic knowledge in (1) humanities (2) physical sciences and (3) life sciences. The curriculum, materials, class size, and schedule are all designed to help students achieve a higher score.

How can i know what level i am?

Upon admission, students will take a placement test that will help determine their English proficiency. They will then be placed in an English course that best suits their needs. Learn more about the assessment metrics and see our rubric here.
